We´re having an amazing holiday this weekend, which begun yesterday with the day of the public servants, and finishes monday with the All Soul´s day. The wheather forecast of sunny days is confirming until now. Today we went to Barra da Lagoa beach. This picture shows some colorful boats and nets in Barra da Lagoa´s tidewater channel.
Fenaostra is an oyster festival that takes place in Florianopolis every year. The festival, that finished yesterday, reunites oyster degustation (by some of the most important restaurants of the island) as well as handicraft fair (celebrating açorian culture) and music shows (which brought some very famous brazilian artists).

O festival, que terminou ontem, reúne degustação de ostras (por alguns dos mais improtantes restaurantes da ilha) como também feira de artesanatos (celebrando a cultura açoriana) e shows de música (que trouxe artistas como Jorge Aragão e Alexandre Pires).
This is a schooner you can see next to the main dock of the north bay. From there you can get a very nice boat cruise around the north bay of the island, having a great view of Beira Mar Norte Avenue and it´s majestic buildings, or either visit some small fortress islands nearby.
This curious tree is in the belvedere I mentioned in the last post, with it´s incredible view over Armação beach. Its branches seems to wish " peace and love", aren´t they?
Esta curiosa árvore fica no mirante que eu mencionei no último post, com sua inacreditável vista para a praia da Armação. Seus galhos parecem estar desejando " paz e amor", não é? O prédio atrás (e na foto abaixo) é o convento de que falei também naquele post.
This is a marvelous view of Armação beach in the south of Florianopolis. The point in which you have this view is from the belvedere of Morro das Pedras (Hill of the Rocks), where there´s also a monastery used by groups in religious retreat.
Esta é uma vista maravilhosa da Praia da Armação no sul de Florianópolis. O ponto onde você consegue este visual é no mirante do Morro das Pedras, onde há também um convento utilizado por grupos para retiro religioso. Na outra foto (desculpem-me pelo zoom, ficou parecendo uma pintura impressionista...) você pode ver uma linha verde/azul entre os dois morros que corresponde à praia do Pântano do Sul.

I´ve just arrived from my vacation trip through France, and I´m very excited to post new photos of Florianopolis. But today, i´ll do something different from what this blog is supposed to be: I´ll share some pictures I took in France, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Beiramar Avenue is the most important avenue in Florianópolis. If you ever visit the city, it´s almost impossible not visiting it. It´s a perfect place to stroll or ride a bike, with lots of beautiful buildings along its cost and a spectacular view. And, of course, a wonderful place to take pictures. 
This photos were taken in a very interesting restaurant in the north of Florianopolis, in Sambaqui, a beach facing the continent. It is decorated with a lot of creatures from Florianopolis folklore, as the witch and others (Maricota, Bernuncia, Boi-de-mamao) which in other oportunity i´ll explain here. The restaurant, called Recanto Restinga, is specialized in seafood and has a wonderful view, besides the great musician that usually is there playing songs inspired in Florianopolis´ culture. 
Ribeirão da Ilha is the second oldest district of Florianopolis, behind Santo Antonio de Lisboa. In this place they still keep traditions as the Our Lady of Lapa Celebration, the production of bilro´s lace, canoes and whaleboats, and cipó baskets. The historic part of the district, where is the seat of the ancient Freguesia, is one of the oldest nucleus of açorian colonization, founded in the 18th century. This is Our Lady of Lapa Church, which was inaugurated in 1806, built by masters and their slaves, in stones, lime and whale oil. In some other time I´ll put some photos of the açorian façades.

This picture was shot in Fort Santana, a fort strategically located in a strait beetween Florianopolis island and the continent. As you see, it´s very close to the end of the bridge in the island side. It was built 1763 to protect anchorage of the ancient village, a passage between the north and the south bay of the island. As an annex to this fort there is the Military Museum Major Antônio de Lara Ribas of Santa Catarina´s Police.
Como se pode ver, está bem próxima da cabeceira da ponte no lado ilhéu. Foi construído em 1763 para defender o ancoradouro da antiga vila, uma passagem entre a baía norte e sul da ilha. Florianopolis has a lot of sites that demonstrate human prehistorical inhabitation. This is a picture of a " oficina lítica" (or lithic oficine, I couldn´t find a correspondent in english), which are vestiges left by the prehistoric men who used basaltic rocks to sharpen or polish their stone´s instruments. This round formation they call polishers, which are circular depressions in a plate form, that results from the polish of intruments. After that they used this " plate" also to press grains.
Hercilio Luz Bridge was the first bridge constructed to link the Island of Santa Catarina (Florianopolis) to the mainland. It is the longest suspension bridge in Brazil.
Itaguaçu is a beach situated in the continental part of Florianopolis. The name Itaguaçu has it´s origin from tupi (language of a south american indian tribe) and means "Big Stones". As says the folk tale, the wiches of the place wanted to make a big party in the most beautiful place in the world. Everybody was invited, the vampires, werewolfs and other creatures of south american indian folklore. But they didn´t want to invite the Devil, because of it´s unsocial behavior. The Devil, very angry because he wasn´t invited, amongst lightning and thunder, punished everyone that was at the party, turning them into stones, the ones that are there until today...
This picture was taken at Barra da Lagoa, which is a small fishing village in the city of Florianópolis. It is situated at the mouth of a tidewater channel that links Lagoa da Conceição (a lagoon) to the sea. There is a pedestrian-only bridge across the tidewater channel, from which this picture was shot. It was completely renovated and strengthened in 2007. On the far side of the bridge there are many houses and a path that leads to a tiny beach and a track to a natural pool. Around the beach of Barra da Lagoa there are a lot of restaurants specialized in sea food. You can also buy fresh fish from the local fishermen, or participate in the Tainha Festival, which takes place in the winter.
The history of this Cathedral begins in 1675, when the bandeirante Francisco Dias Velho, who found Our Lady of Desterro (ancient name of Florianopolis) begins to build a chapel to homage the patron saint. As usual at the time, he chose the highest and more visible place of this small town. Around 1740s, the chapel became small to the number of followers, what took Jose da Silva Paes, first governor of the ancient state, to project a new church in the same place. Began in 1748, the job was finished 25 years later. Since then, it had suffered lots of amplifications and restorations, that changed completely the original architecture. Recently, it has been through a great renovation, that was concluded in march of 2009.It is located in downtown Florianopolis, in front of Square November 15th .
