Sunset at Beiramar ... pôr-do-sol na Beiramar

Beiramar Avenue is the most important avenue in Florianópolis. If you ever visit the city, it´s almost impossible not visiting it. It´s a perfect place to stroll or ride a bike, with lots of beautiful buildings along its cost and a spectacular view. And, of course, a wonderful place to take pictures.

A avenida Beiramar é a mais importante avenida de Florianópolis. Se você visitar algum dia a cidade, é praticamente impossível não passar por ela. É um lugar perfeito para passear ou andar de bicicleta, com vários lindos edifícios pela costa e uma vista espetacular. E, é claro, um lugar maravilhoso para bater fotos.

A shadow... uma sombra

I was registering the end of the street on Itaguaçu beach (to continue here, only on foot) and its tree just in the middle, with the sunset behind me, and I notice the silhouette of myself was registerd too. I liked, so I took another foccusing then on my shadow...

Eu estava registrando o final da rua na praia de Itaguaçu (para continuar aqui só a pé) e a sua árvore bem no meio, com o pôr-do-sol nas minhas costas, e reparei que a minha silueta ficou registrada também. Gostei do resultado, então bati outra foto, focando agora na minha sombra...

Arts and handicrafts ... artesanatos

This is the interior of a souvenirs shop located in a belvedere next to Praia Mole. For me it´s the best store with tipical crafts, with the most beautiful hand made things. Besides, you have a wonderful view of Lagoon of Conceição (bellow), and you can have a cup of coffee. The store´s name is Sol da Terra.

Este é o interior de uma loja de souvenirs que fica num mirante próximo da Praia Mole. Para mim, é a melhor loja com artesanato típico, com os trabalhos mais bonitos. Além disso, você ganha uma vista maravilhosa da Lagoa da Conceição (abaixo), e pode tomar um cafezinho. O nome da loja é Sol da Terra.

A pleasant afternoon in Lagoa ... uma tarde agradável na Lagoa

This is the one of the multiple views of Lagoa da Conceição, a big lagoon in easthern Florianópolis. What we see here is a marina and an yellow house which is the restaurant Fedoca´s. This is very close to the downtown Lagoa.

Those pictures were taken last sunday, at Barra da Lagoa. There were a lot of seagulls because of the fisihing activity that day. Good for me! I had opportunity of taking a lot of photos!

Pleasant evening in Lagoa da Conceição ... noite agradável na Lagoa da Conceição

Although it´s still winter, today we had a very beautiful and pleasant saturday. This is the view from a belvedere of Lagoa da Conceição, an incredibly beautiful lagoon of Florianopolis. Here we can see the downtown Lagoa, it´s too parts that are separeted by a small bridge, the big dunes of Joaquina beach, the sea behind the mountains and a very shiny star that I believe it may be Venus.

Embora ainda seja inverno, tivemos um sábado muito bonito e agradável. Esta é a vista de um mirante para a Lagoa da Conceição, uma lagoa inacreditavelmente bela de Florianopolis. Aqui podemos ver o centrinho da Lagoa, suas duas partes divididas por uma pequena ponte, o mar atrás das montanhas e um astro brilhante que acredito ser Vênus.

Strange creatures of the island ... estranhas criaturas da ilha

This photos were taken in a very interesting restaurant in the north of Florianopolis, in Sambaqui, a beach facing the continent. It is decorated with a lot of creatures from Florianopolis folklore, as the witch and others (Maricota, Bernuncia, Boi-de-mamao) which in other oportunity i´ll explain here. The restaurant, called Recanto Restinga, is specialized in seafood and has a wonderful view, besides the great musician that usually is there playing songs inspired in Florianopolis´ culture.

Estas fotos foram tiradas num restaurante muito interessante no norte de Florianopolis, em Sambaqui, uma praia voltada para o continente. Foi decorado com algumas criaturas do folclore de Floripa, como a bruxa e outros (Maricota, Bernuncia, Boi-de-mamao) que em outra oportunidade vou explicar melhor. O restaurante, chamado Recanto Restinga, e especializado em frutos do mar e tem uma linda vista, alem de um excelente musico que geralmente toca cançoes inspiradas na cultura de Florianopolis.

In Coqueiros, a continental neighborhood of Floripa, there is a beach called " Praia do Meio" (or middle beach). There is a coastal road with lots of restaurants and a beautiful view. In this corner of the beach I always observe a heron, i think it lives there...

Traditions in Ribeirão da Ilha ... Tradições no Ribeirão da Ilha

Ribeirão da Ilha is the second oldest district of Florianopolis, behind Santo Antonio de Lisboa. In this place they still keep traditions as the Our Lady of Lapa Celebration, the production of bilro´s lace, canoes and whaleboats, and cipó baskets. The historic part of the district, where is the seat of the ancient Freguesia, is one of the oldest nucleus of açorian colonization, founded in the 18th century. This is Our Lady of Lapa Church, which was inaugurated in 1806, built by masters and their slaves, in stones, lime and whale oil. In some other time I´ll put some photos of the açorian façades.

Ribeirão da Ilha é o segundo distrito mais antigo de Florianópolis, depois de Santo Antônio de Lisboa. Ali se preservam tradições como a Festa de Nossa Senhora da Lapa, a produção das rendas de bilro, das canoas e baleeiras, dos balaios e cestos de cipó.
O centro histórico, sede da antiga Freguesia, é um dos mais antigos núcleos de colonização açoriana, fundado em meados do século XVIII. A foto é da Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa, que foi inaugurada em 1806 , construída pelos senhores e seus escravos, em alvenaria de pedra, cal e azeite de baleia. Em outros momentos vou publicar fotos das fachadas típicas açorianas.

Tropical roots ... raízes tropicais

The Pará Rubber Tree (called in Brazil seringueira) is a braziliam plant (hevea brasiliensis) origined in Amazonia. It can reach 50m of height and it is of major economic importance because its sap-like extract (known as latex) can be collected and is the primary source of natural rubber. It´s native of the tropics but it is cultivated and occurs in a lot of brazilian states, as well as in south of Brazil, because it has a great adaptation. The ones we find around the city are very big, like this one in Praia do Meio beach in Coqueiros neighborhood, which form a intriguing root carpet.

A seringueira é uma planta brasileira (hevea brasiliensis) , originária da Amazônia. É uma árvore que atinge 50m de altura e de cujo caule, através de incisões oblíquas na casca, escorre um látex com que se produz borracha de primeira qualidade .Embora seja uma planta nativa de climas tropicais úmidos a seringueira é cultivada em diversos estados do Brasil, e pode ocorrer inclusive no sul, pois têm uma ótima adaptação. As que encontramos pela cidade são bem grandes, como esta na praia do meio no bairro Coqueiros, formando um curioso tapete de raízes.

Why is she yelling?? ... por quê ela está gritando??

I love to register gull scenes. I´ll put a lot of them here.
This one was shot in Pântano do Sul beach, a known fishing village in the south of Floripa.
As this day the fishermen just arrived with their boats and their fishing, there were a lot of gulls (and some urubus too) that wanted to catch the rests of the fishes. It seemed to me that she was yelling to her colleagues to say " come on guys, the urubus are taking our food, let´s work like a team!" . Indeed, the few urubus were kicking their asses...

Eu adoro registrar cenas com gaivotas. Colocarei várias delas aqui.
Esta foto foi tirada na praia do Pântano do Sul, uma conhecida vila de pescadores no sul de Floripa. Como neste dia os pescadores tinham recém chegado com seus barcos e sua pesca, haviam muitas gaivotas (e urubus também) que queriam pegar os restos dos peixes. Para mim pareceu que ela estava gritando para suas colegas: " vamos lá gente, os urubus estão pegando nossa comida, vamos trabalhar como um time!". De fato, os poucos urubus estavam detonando...

A fort to protect the city ... um forte para proteger a cidade

This picture was shot in Fort Santana, a fort strategically located in a strait beetween Florianopolis island and the continent. As you see, it´s very close to the end of the bridge in the island side. It was built 1763 to protect anchorage of the ancient village, a passage between the north and the south bay of the island. As an annex to this fort there is the Military Museum Major Antônio de Lara Ribas of Santa Catarina´s Police.

Como se pode ver, está bem próxima da cabeceira da ponte no lado ilhéu. Foi construído em 1763 para defender o ancoradouro da antiga vila, uma passagem entre a baía norte e sul da ilha. Em anexo ao forte está o Museu de Armas Major Antônio de Lara Ribas, da Polícia Militar de Santa Catarina.

Oysters in Ostradamus ... Ostras no Ostradamus

Hi! As I promised yesterday, those were the gratin oysters I had last sunday in Ostradamus.

Lady and seagull ... senhora e gaivota

This is a pier of Ostradamus Restaurant, located in Ribeirão da Ilha, beach facing the continent in the south of Florianópolis (a beach famous for it´s açorian façades and oyster cultivation). The last time I went to this restaurant, there wasn´t those statues. The male represents a fisherman and the female, his wife perhaps. This picture was shot last sunday, when it was very windy and there were a lot of seagulls, as this one above the lady´s head, and other birds like this group that´s passing behind her. It was very pleasant! And the restaurant is marvellous, specialized in oysters. Tomorrow i´ll post a photograph of gratin oysters that I had that day.

Este é o trapiche do restaurante Ostradamus, no Ribeirão da Ilha, que é uma praia no sul de Florianópolis que está de frente para o continente (uma praia conhecida por fachadas açorianas e produção de ostras). A última vez que fui lá não haviam estas estátuas. O senhor representa um pescador e a senhora, a sua esposa, talvez. Esta foto foi tirada no último domingo, quando o tempo estava bastante ventoso e haviam muitas gaivotas, como esta sobre a cabeça da senhora, e outros pássaros, como este grupo que está passando atrás dela. Estava muito agradável! E o restaurante é maravilhoso, especializado em ostras. Amanhã vou postar uma foto de ostras gratinadas que expeerimentei naquele dia.

Prehistoric vestiges in Florianopolis ... Vestígios pré-históricos em Florianopolis

Florianopolis has a lot of sites that demonstrate human prehistorical inhabitation. This is a picture of a " oficina lítica" (or lithic oficine, I couldn´t find a correspondent in english), which are vestiges left by the prehistoric men who used basaltic rocks to sharpen or polish their stone´s instruments. This round formation they call polishers, which are circular depressions in a plate form, that results from the polish of intruments. After that they used this " plate" also to press grains.
This photo was taken in Naufragados beach, Florianopolis´extreme south, you can get there by boat or by an hour walk. There are other sites (that includes rupestrian draws) in the following beaches: Ingleses, Santinho, Armação, Campeche´s island and Barra da Lagoa.

Florianopolis possui vários sítios que demonstram a habitação pelo homem pre-histórico. Esta foto é de uma oficina lítica, que são vestígios deixados pela utilização de pedras basálticas para afiar ou polir instrumentos de pedra. Estas formações redondas sãao chamadas de polidores, que são depressões circulares em forma de prato, resultante do polimento de instrumentos. Também eram utilizados após para a prensa de grãos.

Esta foto foi tirada na praia de Naufragados, extremo sul da ilha, onde você pode chegar de barco ou em 1 hora de trilha. Há outros sítios (que também incluem pinturas rupestres) nas seguintes praias: Ingleses, Santinho, Armação, ilha do Campeche and Barra da Lagoa.

Italian food in Floripa ... comida italiana em Floripa

Hi! This is a room of " It´s Italian Trattoria do Guto" restaurant, located in downtown Florianopolis. It is specialized in pasta, but with a little influence from California, that´s why the name of the restaurant is in part in english. I love it. The inside is very pleasant, with candle light, and a lot of stuff hanged on the ceiling (as you can see), objects that simbolize the italian immigration in south of Brazil. I do recommend fettuccini with funghi sauce and filet mignon, it is divine, or penne al pesto.

Oi! Este é um salão do restaurante " It´s Italian Trattoria do Guto" que fica no centro de Florianopolis. É especializado em massas, mas como uma influência californiana, por isso o nome do restaurante é em parte em inglês. Eu adoro. O interior é muito agradável, com luz de velas, e um monte de objetos pendurados no teto (como você pode ver), os quais simbolizam a imigração italiana no sul do Brasil. Eu recomendo o fetttuccini com molho funghi e filet mignon que é divino, ou também penne al pesto.

The great fig tree ... A grande figueira...

This is the famous fig tree situated in November XV Square, in downtown Florianopolis. In 1891, when it had around 20 years old, it was taken from its original garden and replanted here in the main downtown´s square. It´s very big and provides great shelter from the sun.

Esta é a famosa figueira da praça XV de novembro, no centro de Florianopolis. Em 1891, quando tinha cerca de 20 anos, foi retirada de seu jardim original e replantada aqui na praça mais importante do centro. Ela é muito grande é fornece um bom abrigo contra o sol forte.

Hercilio Luz Bridge

Hercilio Luz Bridge was the first bridge constructed to link the Island of Santa Catarina (Florianopolis) to the mainland. It is the longest suspension bridge in Brazil.

The bridge was completed in 1926 and took ten times its original budget to build. It was named in honour of Hercilio Luz, a former governor of the state of Santa Catarina. The bridge has been closed since 1991, because of safety issues. It´s been a long time that the link between island and mainland is made by two other bridges. Now Hercilio Luz it´s passing through a big restoration, because it´s the most important symbol of the city. I intend to publish a lot of pictures of it in different times of the day, in the future. This view is from the island, northern bay.

A Ponte Hercilio Luz foi a primeira ponte construída para ligar a ilha de Santa Catarina (Florianopolis) ao continente. É a maior ponte suspensa do Brasil. Foi completada em 1926 e custou 10 vezes mais do que o orçamento inicial. Seu nome é uma homenagem ao primeiro governador de Santa Catarina, Hercílio Luz. Está fechada desde 1991 por motivo de segurança. Há tempo já que esta ligação é feita por outras duas pontes. No momento, a Hercilio Luz está passando por uma grande reforma, pois é o principal símbolo da cidade. Pretendo colocar muitas fotos dela aqui, em diferentes horários do dia. Esta vista é da ilha, na baía norte.

The moon and Beira Mar Avenue ... A lua e a avenida Beira Mar

I took those pictures yesterday, from my car, when I was going to work around 7:30 am. Those clouds with its oranges and violets, and the moon, just made me wanna photograph...

Tirei estas fotos ontem, do meu carro, enquanto ia para o trabalho por volta das 7:30 da manhã. As nuvens com seus tons alaranjados e violetas, e a lua, simplesmente me deu vontade de fotografar...

Praia da Armação

This photo was shot in a smal peninsula that separates Armação beach from Matadeiro beach, in southern Florianopolis. It´s a small fishing village and gets crowded on summer. Around this peninsula there are lots of rocks underwater and it´s a good place for snorkelling. You can either take a boat from there to visit Campeche Island, 30 minutes from there, also a good place (or better) for snorkelling aand scuba diving. The name of the beach (Armação) has origin in the 18th century when they used to capture whales to take it´s oil to urban lighting. Nowadays, if you´re lucky, you can see whales here, and thank God, that practice is past a long time ago, and they can visit this place with no harm.

Esta foto foi tirada numa pequena península que separa a praia da Armação da praia do Matadeiro, no sul da ilha. É vila de pescadores, que fica lotada no verão. Ao redor desta península há muitas pedras sob a água, sendo um bom local para prática de snorkelling. Também pode-se pegar ali um barco e visitar a ilha do Campeche, 30 minutos dali, também um ótimo (e até melhor) local para praticar mergulho livre ou scuba. O nome da praia , Armação, tem sua origem no século 18 quando era praticada a captura de baleias, de onde era tirado o óleo para a iluminação urbana. Hoje em dia, se houver sorte, pode-se avistar uma baleia, que agora podem passear pela região sem nenhum risco.
