"Berbigão do Boca" - official opening of the Carnaval 2010 (abertura oficial do Carnaval 2010

Berbigão do Boca (Boca´s cockles) is a traditional carnival bloco in Florianópolis, which was born in an Ash Wednesday in 1992. A group of carnival revelers, among them Paulo Abrahan (Boca) argued about the apathy of the city that day. They created this party to promote the integration between carnival blocos and samba schools. It takes place a week before the Carnival - this year in february 5th (it is considered the official opening of the event) at the Public Market after midday, with a contest for the best cockle cooker. Five thousand people followed the bloco and the sound truck, which played carnival march songs, and the 20 big dolls that homage historic and folkloric personalities of the city, that tradiotionally have parade through downtown streets for 18 years. Um grupo de foliões, entre eles Paulo Abrahan, o " Boca", questionava a apatia da cidade naquele dia. A festa foi criada para promover a integração entre os blocos de carnaval e as escolas de samba. Ocorre uma semana antes do Carnaval - este ano foi no dia 5 de fevereiro (considerado a abertura oficial do mesmo), no Mercado Público a partir do meio-dia, com concurso gastronômico do maior "berbigãozeiro". Cinco mil pessoas acompanharam o bloco e o caminhão de som que tocava marchinhas de carnaval, e os 20 enormes bonecos do Berbigão do Boca que homenageiam figuras históricas e folclóricas da cidade, que tradicionalmente desfilam pelas ruas do centro há 18 anos. Our Lady of Conception´s Church ... Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Conceição

The church Our Lady of Conception, in Lagoon of Cenceição, was built in 1780, in portuguese architecture. In 1999 it was elevated to Sanctuary. It is located in a hill over the lagoon.A igreja Nossa Senhora da Conceição, na Lagoa da Conceição em Florianópolis, foi construída em 1780, com arquitetura colonial portuguesa. Em 1999 foi elevada a santuário. Está localizada num morro sobre a lagoa.

Our Lady of Conception ... Nossa Senhora da Conceição

This mosaic of Our Lady of Conception is in the wall of a very nice restaurant in the island, Ponto de Vista (Point of View), which has an espectacular view to the Lagoon of Conceição. Mosaics are a very usual kind of art in Florianopolis, you can find them in a lot of places. Tomorrow i´ll post an image of the Our Lady of Conception´s church.

Este mosaico da Nossa Senhora da Conceição está na parede de um restaurante muito legal na ilha, o Ponto de Vista, que tem uma vista espetacular da Lagoa da Conceição.

Mosaicos são uma forma de arte muito comum em Florianópolis, você pode encontrá-los em vários lugares.

Santo Antonio de Lisboa´s Church ... Igreja de Santo Antônio de Lisboa

This is Santo Antonio de Lisboa´s church, a church that belongs to the neighborhood with the same name in Florianopolis. It´s a very picturesque place, and a very disputed church by the brides in town.

Esta é a Igreja de Santo Antônio de Lisboa, que fica no bairro de mesmo nome em Florianópolis.
É um lugar muito pitoresco, além de ser muito disputado pelas noivas da cidade.

It was a very warm evening by the sea in Santo Antonio de Lisboa. You can see the lights of Hercilio Luz bridge far-off in the picture.

Foi uma noite quente em Santo Antonio de Lisboa. Você pode ver as luzes da ponte Hercílio Luz ao longe na foto.

Santo Antonio de Lisboa´s oldest square 1 ... praça mais antiga de Santo Antonio de Lisboa 1

This is a part of the square I mentioned last post. It was late at night, but still there were some artisans. The second picture shows the front part of the wall I showed in the last post. It says " In 1698 january 11th, were conceived the first portions of this land to Father Matheus de Leão and to some portuguese families. In 1748 the açorians came in a large group to occupy and guarantee the territory. It as raised to the category of Freguesia by Dom João V in 1750 april 27th with the following name Nossa Senhora das Necessidades da Praia Comprida. In 1948 it received the present name, Santo Antonio de Lisboa. It´s cultural wealth is the result of the life, work and habits of the carijós (indians), portugueses, africans and much others, that, until today, compose a simple life, fraternal and hospitable."

Santo Antonio de Lisboa´s oldest square ... a praça mais antiga de Santo Antônio de Lisboa

In this neighborhood of Santo Antonio de Lisboa, which is one of the most ancient neighborhoods of the island, there´s a small square made of stone bricks , where every weekend takes place a small handicrafts fair. The words in that little wall in english are "Roldão da Rocha Pires Square - the first pavement street of the state of Santa Catarina, as an homage to the visit of emperor Dom Pedro II to Santo Antonio de Lisboa in october 21, 1845".

No bairro de Santo Antônio de Lisboa, que é um dos mais antigos da ilha, há uma pequena praça calçada com pedras, onde todo final de semana ocorre uma feirinha de artesanatos. As palavras escritas neste mural mostram que a praça foi feita em homenagem à visita de Dom Pedro II ao lugar em 1845.

Clear water for a dive ... água cristalina para um mergulho

The same day I took the photo of the last post, the sea water was crystalline. It´s been a long time that we don´t see such a clear water in this beach, which is a very nice place to do some dive, with seahorses, turtles and lots of different kinds of fish. My husband took his equipment to do spearfishing , but i didn´t take my snorkelling stuff, unfortunately. In the second photo, a group of friends were coming back from a scuba dive they did nearby.

No mesmo dia que tirei a foto do último post, a água do mar estava cristalina. Há tempo que a água não ficava assim tão clara nesta praia, que é um lugar ótimo para mergulhar, com cavaloss-marinhos, tartarugas e diversos tipos de peixes. Meu marido levou seu eequipamento para fazer caça submarina, mas eu infelizmente não trouxe meu material para snorkelling. Na segunda foto, um grupo de amigos estava voltando de um mergulho (scuba) que foram faazer ali perto.

Children´s play ... Brincadeira de criança

I took this picture while sunbathing at Pantano do Sul beach last Sunday. I remembered how I loved to play in the sand when I was a kid!

Tirei esta foto enquanto tomava sol na praia do Pântano do Sul no último domingo. Me lembrei como gostava de brincar na areia quando era pequena!

Another caipirinha ... outra caipirinha

Caipirinha is a very popular drink in Brazil, world wide known. It´s a drink made with pieces of lemon, sugar, ice and a little bit of cachaça (brazilian rum) or vodka. I´m a fan. But nowadays I prefer saquerinha, which has the same idea of caipirinha but made with Sake, a japanese drink, and the fruit you want. You can find it in a lot of restaurants around the island, not only in japaneses restaurants.

This one of the picture I made it myself. You chop some strawberries (the amount of a small box), put in a whisky glass, add 2 dessert spoons of sugar then you crush and mash it (you may use the handle of a wooden spoon, but here we have an especific instrument fot that). Add cubs of ice to the top of the glass, then fill it with Sake. Then mix or shake it with a drinking straw, and it´s done!

Caipirinha é o nosso drink típico, conhecido mundialmente, feita tradicionalmente com limão e cachaça (ou vodka). Adoro, mas ultimamente tenho curtido mais a saquerinha (de morango especialmente), que é a caipirinha de Saquê. Você encontra saquerinha em diversos restaurantes da ilha.

Esta da foto eu mesma fiz. Corte morangos (a quantia de uma caixinha), coloque em um copo de whisky, adicione 2 colheres de sobremesa de açúcar e amasse tudo com um socador de caipirinha. Adicione cubos de gelo até o topo do copo, e depois preenhca tudo com Saquê. Misture bem e está pronta!

Christmas tree of discord ... A árvore de Natal da discórdia

This Christmas tree, which is about to be removed, was envolved in a polemical debate this month. This happened because of the costs of the ornament: something about U$2.000.000,00. People have said it has the same cost of an Emergency Unit. But it´s worse than that. The cost was overpriced. The hired company (chosen without a public tender) outsourced the service to another 2 entertainment companies, for half of the capital invested... I guess this aim of mega parties in the island is not working out, as the Andrea Bocelli concert that would take place yesterday has been called off too. I got very very sad :(
Esta árvore que você vê nas fotos, que está prestes a ser removida, foi alvo de muita polêmica este mês em Florianópolis. A polêmica se deu por conta do valor do enfeite: algo em torno de R$3 milhões. Valor que também corresponde à construção de uma unidade de Pronto Socorro. Mas o pior não foi isso, foi a confirmação do superfaturamento. A empresa contratada, sem licitação, terceirizou o serviço para outras duas empresas de eventos, pela metade do valor. Pelo jeito os planos de megafestas de fim de ano na ilha não estão dando muito certo, vide também o cancelamento do show que o tenor italiano Andrea Bocelli faria ontem. Fiquei muito triste :(

Mango crab ... Siri na manga

This wonderful dish I first tried at the restaurant of the Hotel Costa Norte in Florianopolis. I could not resist and tried to do it myself, after researching some recipes on the Internet. And well, it turned out quite good! If you want to try this exotic and very tasty dish, there goes the recipe! It's a great idea as an entry for a dinner with seafood.
Ingredients (for 4 servings)
* 400g of crab meat;
* 2 mangoes on point (can not be too hard);
* 2 Italian-style tomatoes (medium);
* 1/2 small onion;
* 3 / 4 of a bottle of curd cheese;
* 1 serving (cup of rum) of cognac (brandy);
* 1 stalk of celery;
* Grated Parmesan cheese;
* Salt, black pepper and nutmeg to taste;
How to prepare
Cut the onion and chopped tomatoes and set aside. Grate the celery stalk in a grater and set aside. Cut the mangoes in half, lengthwise, into 2 halves. Do this carefully so as not to destroy the shell. From the piece that you got the lump, you remove it gently with a knife. Remove much of the pulp of the two halves and separate it. The idea is that the two halves of the sleeve remain as they were two shells. Turn the oven at high temperature. Fry the chopped onion in olive oil. When gilding and sticking in the pan, put a bit of cognac to come unglued. Add the tomatoes and saute a little more. Then add the grated celery and shredded crabmeat. Let the fire high, and when the crab is sticking in the pan, add the rest of the cognac. Then add the curd cheese and dissolve it, forming a cream. Flavour with pepper, salt and nutmeg, go slowly giving the flavor and adding more if necessary. Finally, add to this mixture the mango pulp cut into cubes. Try again and see if it needs more salt. When the flavor is cool, put this filling inside the mango shells you manufactured. On top, put grated cheese and bake until it´s golden brown colored.

Nativity scene... presépio de Natal

The city is already full of interesting Christmas decoration. This one is a Nativity scene that I captured in Costão do Costinho Resort, a luxury hotel in the north of the island. I was there because of a Family Medicine Congress which was taking place.

A cidade já está repleta de interessantes enfeites de Natal. Este é um presépio que fotografei no Costão do Santinho, um hotel de luxo no norte da ilha. Eu estava lá por ocasião do X Congresso de Medicina de Família e Comunidade.

Magical night and wine ... noite mágica e vinho

Last friday we had a very pleasant and warm night, perfect to go out and have dinner by the beach. We went to this restaurant in Santo Antonio de Lisboa neighborhood, called Bate Ponto, which has a terrace over the ocean. It´s a perfect place to have some seafood and a rosé wine in a warm summer night (or a hot spring night, as it was...).

Na última sexta-feira tivemos uma noite muito agradável, perfeita para sair e jantar na praia. Fomos a este restaurante, em Santo Antonio de Lisboa, chamado Bate Ponto, o qual tem um terraço sobre o mar. É um lugar perfeito para experimentar frutos do mar e um vinho rosê numa noite de verão (ou numa noite quente de primavera, como era...)

Last post I showed a picture of a dove that adopted my house to make its nest.

This picture now shows the dove and her 2 babies! Yesterday, one of the babies was learning to fly. They´re are not there anymore right now, I´m sad... I hope they´re ok wherever they are.No último post mostrei uma foto de uma pomba-rola que adotou a minha casa para fazer o seu ninho. Esta figura agora mostra a pomba e seus 2 filhotes! Ontem, um dos filhotes estava aprendendo a voar. Agora eles não estão mais lá, estou triste... Espero que estejam bem aonde estiverem.

A cute visitor ... uma fofa visitante

This cute ground dove is the newest inhabitant of my house. Just look where she built her nest, up on the roof´s support. The animal kingdom is really amazing, isn´t it?

Esta pombinha-rola é a mais nova habitante da minha casa. Olha só onde ela construiu o seu ninho, bem lá em cima no suporte do telhado. O reino animal é mesmo incrível, não é?

Hymn of the love for the island ... Rancho de amor à Ilha
